Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has put an end to the buzz surrounding his Canadian citizenship. The actor posted a photo of official papers declaring him an Indian citizen. The newspaper from the Government of India states, ‘This certifies that the person whose details are provided below is registered as an Indian citizen…’
The official newspaper refers to the actor as Akshay Hariom Bhatia and his father’s name is mentioned as Brijmohan Bhatia and his mother’s name is Aruna Bhatia. While his birthplace is Delhi, his previous nationality has been recorded as Canadian.
Akshay shared the photo with the caption: “Civil rights Dil aur, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind! .” When the actor shared the news, fans congratulated him on obtaining Indian citizenship.
Earlier, Akshay spoke about her decision to give up her Canadian passport. “India is everything to me… Whatever I earn, whatever I earn, comes from here. And I’m lucky I have the opportunity to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything…”, the 55-year-old actor said in an interview with Aaj Tak.
Akshay Kumar has been applying for Canadian citizenship since the 1990s when 15 of his films hit the box office in a row. “I thought, ‘Bhai, my movies don’t work and people have to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘Come here’. I applied and I got in. I only have two movies left to release and I’m so lucky they both turned out to be super hits. My friend said, ‘Go back, start working again’. I have some more movies and I keep getting more and more jobs. I forgot that I had a passport. I never thought I should change this passport but now yes, I applied to change my passport,” he said in the interview.
However, this process has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. He told the Hindustan Times, “I said it in 2019, I signed up. Then we bathed the pandemic aagaya. Uske 2-2.5 saal sab ice hogaya hogaya. Renunciation letter ka abhi mera aagaya hai (Then the pandemic hit and everything stopped working for 2-2.5 years. My renunciation letter is here), and soon my entire passport will be delivered.”
“Having a Canadian passport does not mean that I am inferior to an Indian. I am very Indian. I’ve been here since nine years ago when I got my passport. And I don’t want to delve into why, what happened, my movie didn’t work, etc,” he added.
Meanwhile, Akshay is continuing the success of the recently released film OMG 2. The film delivers a profound message about sex education.
