President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday praised the “common civil code” in Goa, saying it was the pride of the state and a good example for the country.
She also noted that women enjoy equal status in the state’s cosmopolitan culture.
The President, who had arrived in Goa for a three-day visit earlier in the day, was responding to a civilian reception held for her at Raj Bhavan.
The president said women are considered equal in Goa’s cosmopolitan culture.
“The number of female students attending university in Goa is more than 60 per cent, but there is a need to increase the participation of women in the state workforce,” she said.
She added: “It is proud of Goa that its people have adopted a common civil code.
Goa has a colonial Portuguese Civil Code that applies to people of all religions.
“The Common Civil Code that provides equal rights to women and men of all communities living in Goa is an example of the cosmopolitan culture here,” added President Murmu.
She said it was consistent with the Constitution and set a good example for the country.
At the national level, the proposed Uniform Civil Code has recently been in the spotlight as the Legal Committee sought the views of different stakeholders on the issue.
Meanwhile, Murmu also praised the state’s ‘Atmanirbhar Goa’ initiative, saying the concept was appreciated nationally.
She added that the coastal nation has also done well on the sustainability front.
PS Governor Sreedharan Pillai, Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister Shripad Naik were all present on the occasion.
