Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal narrowly clinched three points at Selhurst Park with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Martin Odegaard’s penalty helps the Gunners continue to achieve a 100% win rate this season, something only two other teams have achieved in just two games.
Arsenal dominated the first half and started the second in a similar fashion. They were well rewarded for their efforts when Gabriel Martinelli fired a quick free-kick to find Eddie Nketiah behind the Palace defence, before Sam Johnstone knocked the forward.
Gunners captain Odegaard stepped up, who perfectly hit the bottom left corner to put his team ahead. Since the start of last season, only Bukayo Saka has contributed to more Premier League goals for Arsenal than the Norwegian.
However, shortly after taking the lead, Takehiro Tomiyasu was shown a yellow card for buying time while taking a throw-in. Soon after, he pulled the shirt of Jordan Ayew, who beat him, then received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Palace, with the addition of one man, suddenly gained most of the ball possession and the game was in their favor. Eberechi Eze dribbled into the box and was sandwiched between Declan Rice and Thomas Partey. He fell to the ground but referee David Coote signaled for play to continue.
The home team continued to attack in search of an equalizer, but Arsenal’s defense showed resilience to win 3 points.
After the second game in the Premier League, Brighton & Hove Albion top the table with six points. Pep Guardiola’s army is second, Arsenal is behind in third place.

All the time: It’s all at Selhurst Park! Arsenal took all three points despite Palace’s efforts but the Gunners’ defense remained solid and Arteta’s men had two wins by two games!
93rd minute: Palace are patiently attacking but have difficulty breaking down Arsenal’s backline. They need to start seizing opportunities when time is running out.
90th minute: There will be a minimum of seven minutes of extra time! Enough for a Palace equalizer?
80 minutes: Sky Sports just showed two of Tomiyasu’s bookable fouls and while it looks light, you can’t waste any more time and stopping an attack is always a yellow card!
72 minutes: Eze’s trick got him sandwiched between Partey and Rice inside the box and he fell to the ground. Calls for a penalty were expected, but David Coote kept playing.
Minute 67: Tomiyasu has been kicked off the field! Ayew surpassed him in speed and the Japanese player pulled his shirt back. It’s a bit harsh but overall it’s probably a bookable offense.
We were down to 10 people after Tomiyasu got his second yellow card.

59 minutes: Tomiyasu was booked because it was a waste of time! It’s a bit early for that, isn’t it?!
56th minute: Since January 2022, Arteta’s army has not lost when leading in the Premier League. However, Palace have won the most points after finishing behind last season (25 points). Let’s see what the last half hour has for us!
53rd minute: Odegaard stepped up and scored in the bottom left corner!
51st minute: Arsenal continued to dominate from the first half and were awarded a penalty! Nketiah was knocked down after hitting the ball past Johnstone, who knocked him down skeptically.
46th minute: The players are back on the field and the second half is on!
half time: Arsenal were the team with the most possession and launched 9 shots but only 1 on target. Palace looked like they could cause a few problems during the break and will certainly continue to do so in the second half.
43rd minute: The Gunners take a quick free-kick and the ball reaches Martinelli’s feet in a volley but he goes wide of the post.
36th minute: Arsenal took the lead and Rice found Nketiah with a delicate pass but his thoughts on Johnstone were too ambitious and over the bar.
35th minute: It was a great challenge from Saliba to deny a potential shot on target from Ayew. The defender timed it perfectly and had to, otherwise it would have been a clear penalty!
29th minute: OFF CARDS FOR Arsenal! Nketiah used his great legs to get past Andersen and tried to find the far corner but was rejected by the post.
27 minutes: We got our first yellow card of the evening when Ayew caught Havertz for a late foul, no doubt about that decision despite his objections.
24th minute: Arsenal currently have 68% possession but are still waiting for their first shot on target.
Minute 16: Palace is appealing for a penalty! Edouard’s attempt sent Ben White to the floor but it apparently hit him in the stomach.
12th minute: The home fans were clearly pleased that Michael Olise chose to stay at Selhurst instead of going to Stamford Bridge.
Crystal Palace fans frankly criticized Chelsea saying “Olise is ours”. #CRYARS
– Winter Henry (@henrywinter) August 21, 2023
8 minutes: Palace made the first attack thanks to Ayew but his cross was well saved by Saliba.
5th minute: Arsenal got off to a brilliant start, holding the ball for the most part but were yet to create any dangerous chances.
1st minute: The teams are out and we are underway at Selhurst Park!
15 minutes before start: Arsenal’s Monday night football record was not the best. They have lost all four away Premier League games on Monday night under Mikel Arteta – their last win came in December 2019 against West Ham. Fredrik Ljungberg is the interim coach.
30 minutes before start: Buyako Saka is playing his 82nd consecutive Premier League game for Arsenal – equaling Paul Merson’s record in a game for the Gunners from February 1995 to February 1997.

60 minutes before start: Team news is hot!
