Gadar 2 is poised to become one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Hindi movies in history. The long-awaited sequel to the 2001 hit Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is storming the box office and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it recorded its biggest single-day revenue on Independence Day, when it raked in Rs 55 crore, according to early estimates by industry-tracking firm Sacnilk. This is the biggest Independence Day grossing in Indian cinema history. Gadar 2’s box office is currently at Rs 229 crore in India.
The film has an overall viewing rating of 88% across the Hindi belt, which is phenomenal. Gadar 2 is primarily aimed at a North Indian audience, while Rajinikanth’s Jailer does even better business in the South. Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 clashes with OMG 2 on Friday, and as reported by Box Office India, the film could do even better business if it were released alone. The BOI said Gadar 2 faced capacity issues on Independence Day, with some single theaters unable to meet demand. Although additional screenings were added, the film still exceeded expectations at the box office.
Gadar 2 earned Rs 40 billion on day one, Rs 43 billion on day two, Rs 51 billion on day three, Rs 38 billion on wednesdayand Rs 55 crore on Thursday, for a total net worth of Rs 229 crore in India. Next, the film will surpass the lifetime span of Kerala Story, and after that, will aim to beat the all-time Hindi record set by Pathaan starring Shah Rukh Khan earlier this year. The action film has earned Rs 543 crore nett in India and over Rs 1000 crore worldwide. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted when asking his followers if Gadar 2 would surpass Pathaan’s Lifetime business film and become the highest-grossing film in India in terms of gross. net income or not.
The first Gadar, also directed by Anil Sharma, was a blockbuster in 2001, when it pitted against the critically acclaimed Lagaan. It ended with Rs 130 crore at the global box office, a record that Gadar 2 set within a few days.
