Meet R Praggnanandhaa, Indian chess prodigy to take on No 1 Magnus Carlsen in FIDE World Cup final today

Millions of Indians on Tuesday will cheer on teenage chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, known as Pragg as he battles five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen for the world No. Tuesday at the FIDE World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Praggnanandhaa beat world No. 3 Fabiano Caruana and stormed into the FIDE World Cup final.

Several political leaders and sports celebrities are backing the 18-year-old for making India proud at the world chess cup.

ABOUT R PRAGGNANANDHAA

Born and raised in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Praggnanandhaa became interested in Chess after his older sister, Vaishali, started playing chess at the age of 6. At that time, he was only 2 years old.

Vaishali then became a grandmaster in 2018 and an international grandmaster in 2021.

At the same time, Praggnanandhaa was given many opportunities to hone his skills, especially at Bloom Chess Academy, where he said he “learned a lot”.

When Pragg was 6, he won second place in the Indian Under 7 Championships before winning a gold medal at the Asian Championships, then winning the World Youth Chess Championship for the Ages. under 8 and under 10 years old.

In 2016, Praggnanandhaa made history after winning the ninth game at the KIIT International Chess Festival in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

At the age of 10 years, 10 months and 19 days, he became an international chess grandmaster – the youngest ever.

Yesterday, Praggnanandhaa defeated Fabiano Caruana with a score of 3.5-2.5 after a tiebreak.

Congressman Rahul Gandhi congratulated Grandmaster of India on reaching the final of the FIDE World Cup and sent his best wishes for the title match against Magnus Carlsen.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik wrote: “Congratulations to young Indian grandmaster R #Praggnanandhaa on an impressive win over world number 3 Fabiano Caruana in the semifinals of the #FIDEWorldCup Chess Championship. Best wishes for the match. final match against reigning world champion Magnum Carlsen”.
