Manchester United said on Monday that Mason Greenwood would leave the club despite a criminal investigation into a possible rape that was closed by prosecutors six months ago.
The 21-year-old England striker has not played for United since January 2022 and his future remains unclear in the club’s own investigation.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties he faced at the start of his career at Manchester United,” the club said in a statement. “Therefore, both sides have agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to leave Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that.”
Greenwood said it was “the best decision for all of us… to continue my football career leaving Old Trafford, where my presence will not be an inconvenience to the club.”
Greenwood was implicated in the control, enforcement and assault involving a young woman after the photos and videos were posted online.
UK prosecutors closed their case in February and United’s own investigation continues.
