Spain won its first Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory over England.
Spain’s victory in the third World Cup has prevented the Lionesses – the reigning European champions – from bringing the trophy home for the first time since 1966. The British men’s team won the championship. the nation’s only World Cup winner that year.
Spain won thanks to Olga Carmona’s goal in the 29th minute. The left-back has scored in World Cup head-to-head matches for Spain, the team with 18 of the best goals in this World Cup, and became the seventh player in tournament history to score in both the semi-finals and the final.
Spain, the team that almost had a mutiny last year when 15 players left the national team, were the more attacking team in the final and forced the whole game.

England’s loss was the first loss in this tournament for coach Sarina Wiegman, who was hired at the end of 2021 as the team’s first non-British coach. It was also Wiegman’s second straight loss in the final.
She is the only coach in tournament history to bring two nations to the final; Wiegman was the Dutch coach when the Netherlands lost 2-0 to the United States in 2019.
The final guarantees a first-time Women’s World Cup champion as neither Spain nor England have ever lifted the trophy.
