Sushmita plays a transgender woman based on real-life activist Shreegauri Sawant, in Taali. The show maps the life and journey of Shreegauri Sawant, her daring transformation from Ganesh to Gauri and the discrimination she suffered because of it; Her fearless journey to motherhood and the audacious fight that resulted in the inclusion and identification of a third sex on every official document in India.
One person wrote on Twitter, “Just binge watching another incredible show, I have to say You are an inspiration & an organization within yourself @thesushmitasen! What a charming, brave and charismatic performance, worthy of respect. First #aarya and now #Taali means how do you do this and take everyone on this emotional trip; must see guys and kudos to the manufacturer and the entire engineering team. Another tweet read: “In a world where stereotypes fall, Gauri’s words echo: ‘Maa hona koi gender nahi, bas hai feeling.’ Thank you to @ShreegauriS for fighting for equality and standing up for the transgender community.”
Another tweet wrote that Taali is a ‘true tribute to individuality & freedom.’ “@thesushmitasen, the queen of the universe entertained us all on Independence Day by portraying @GauriSawant11 aesthetically as she really is. What a show,” they wrote. Another tweet read: “Great performance by @thesushmitasen as@ShreegauriS in Taali. The film’s impact is unparalleled, and the credits of @meranamravi and the entire team have been credited in the perfect direction. #TaaliOnJioCinema.”
The Hindustan Times review of the series was unimpressive. “Sushmita Sen tries her best to breathe life into Gauri, but there is always the mundaneity of her screen presence in between. The obvious obstacle is her rigid body language and how she reacts to any situation that is predictable after a certain point. It was a colorful one-note performance, devoid of curiosity and surprise,” it wrote.
Taali is created by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar, directed by National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav, written by Kshitij Patwardhan and produced by Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartk D Nishandar (GSEAMS Production) and Afeefa Nadiadwala.
