LONDON – The player ratings between Tottenham and Manchester United are exciting as the two Premier League powerhouses go all out to win and Spurs’ midfield duo were key to victory.
It was Spurs who prevailed as Pape Matar Sarr and an own goal secured the win after a superb second-half display of passion and grit on Ange’s home debut. Postecoglou as Tottenham manager.
Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have plenty of chances but they still have huge imbalances in the squad, especially in midfield, to get rid of.
Below you will find out the score out of 10 and breakdown of each player.
Tottenham player ratings
Guglielmo Vicario: 8 – Make a brilliant save to deny Rashford in the first half and a brilliant save from close range to deny Casemiro’s mighty header in the second half. Another brilliant late save to deny Varane’s header (very similar to Casemiro’s attempt) and he didn’t know the flag was up. What a great home debut.
Pedro Porro: 7 – The shot hits the crossbar just before the break. Offers many of the right attack threats. He still needs to improve his defense a bit but has performed very well.
Christian Romero: 7 – The defense was as solid as ever but slipped and Casemiro headed into the goal, which Vicario saved. It’s a bit erratic when it comes to jumping out from behind but his partnership with Micky van de Ven is still evolving.
Mickey van de Ven: 7 – A bit shaky on possession early on and Rashford fell behind him and Romero on some occasions but improved as the game went on and got better on the ball.
destiny: 8 – Great energy from left-back, high and high defensively. Already a big fan favorite.
Pope Matar Sarr: 9 – What a performance. Scored his goal with a neat finish after a run against the post, won the ball back multiple times and didn’t stop running. Still only 20 years old.
Sarr puts Tottenham ahead of Manchester United
Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring for Tottenham in the second half to take a 1-0 lead over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Yves Bissouma: 9 – Along with Sarr, he won the ball over and over again. Great defensive performance and he went forward too. Spurs have strangled United in midfield.
Dejan Kulusevsky: 8 – Excellent winger in front of Sarr’s goal and a constant threat of counter-attacks. He is back to his best form.
James Madison: 7.5 – The only reason he didn’t get an 8 is because on some occasions he slowed tackles instead of being more direct. Classy on the ball and always wanted it. Clean player.
Heung Min Son: 8 – Don’t stop running and always want the ball on the left wing. He almost scored an unbelievable goal when he dribbled into the box but Shaw’s save denied him. Transferred to the starting XI in the second half when Richarlison left the field.
Richarlison:7 – Worked hard at the top only roll up and unfortunately was subbed off. Not many opportunities but always ready to rush.
substitution
Ivan Pericic: 7 – Helps calm things down and his pass leading to the second goal was beautiful.
Ben Davies: 7 – Use your experience to defend well and get involved in the second goal.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: 6 – Working hard to solidify things in midfield late in the game.
Solomon’s Manor: 7 – Some lovely and running movies. He could be the starter.
Royal Emerson: Do not apply
Manchester United player ratings
Andrew Onana:6 – Great delivery but there really isn’t much to do in terms of tackles. A good stop low to reject Udogie.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5 – Had a really hard time stopping Son’s runs and lost his place in the second half before he was substituted.
Raphael Varane: 5 – Tough match against Richarlison and couldn’t get on the ball and smooth things over. It’s all very frantic at the back of United.
Lisandro Martinez: 5 – A couple of tackles almost resulted in a penalty and like Varane, never looked comfortable as Spurs advanced.
Luke Shaw: 6 – Kulusevski overtook him too easily to score the first goal. Tried to get on the ball but never really got a chance to get out of his own half. There’s not much help in front of him.
Casemiro: 6 – Witness a header successfully parried by Vicario and lost to Sarr and Bissouma in the midfield fight. Didn’t get much help from Mount and Fernandes by his side.
Anthony: 6 – A shot hit the post in the second half but was booked in the first half and substituted in the second. There were good areas but couldn’t choose the right pass.
Bruno Fernandes: 5 – Moments after making a ridiculous rabona pass, he missed an absolute header in the first half with a 0-0 scoreline. Set for dissent. Disappointed silhouette transparent. Looks lost in a deeper shoulder.
MasonMount: 4 – Almost without a kick. Unable to influence the game playing right in front of Casemiro and Spurs cornered him. Need to play further forward to have an impact.
Alejandro Garnacho:4 – Rarely enters the game. Isolated on the left wing and did not help Shaw in defense.
Marcus Rashford: 6 – Heads over the body and is denied in the face of Vicario. Continued to run focused but no one found him.
substitution
Christian Eriksen: 6 – He has the ball whenever he can and receives a warm welcome from the Spurs fans.
Diogo Dalot: 6 – Tried hard to strengthen everything in defense while adding something in attack.
Jadon Sancho: 6 – Do their best to bring life to United’s attack and there were a couple of attempts to go wide of the post.
Anthony Martial: Do not apply
Facundo Pellistri: Do not apply
